Reading Rainbow app:
Books that your child can read on his/her own or listen to a reader read the text while your child follow along. Wide selection of books with newness added often. Different genres. Also videos that are appealing for everyone. This is a paid subscription, but well worth the fee. All grade levels. (i use this app at the end of my tutoring lessons as a way to wind down after working and to reinforce oral reading fluency.
Tumblebooks e-books for children:
Another paid subscription of online books for children. used in some public schools. Expensive, but they often have free trials. For all grade levels. ($30 for 3 months, $50 for 6 months and $90 for a year)
For Early Childhood:
Bob Books app or hard copy books:
Scholastic publishes a series of Bob Books which reinforce decoding skills in a fun way. Each level is more challenging than the preceding one. You can purchase the books as well. I like the Bob Book app because the students can manipulate the letters to put them in the correct order to spell the words. The child hears the word said aloud and the letter sound selected. Very hands on for reinforcement. Moves from single words to sentences. Colorful pictures. For the earliest readers. ($3.99)
Kids Spell Animals app:
Picture is shown of an animal and the word spelled correctly. Then the letters are scrambles and the child is asked to rearrange to spell the word correctly. You can try a sample before purchasing. For early readers. ($3.99)
ABC first phonics app:
Free samples for early readers. Teaches high frequency words (DOLCH).
Starfall ABCs app: An alphabet app for the Pre-Kindergarten student. This is a paid app that is often used in schools. (2.99)
Endless Alphabet app: A paid app that introduces early readers to great vocabulary in a game format.
Reading Raven: App is $3.99 and has wonderful graphics that reinforces phonics for early readers.
Word Wizard app: This is for Pre-Kindergarten children and is a talking movable alphabet and spelling app. Gives the child feedback as he/she builds words and/or sentences. (2.99)
Word Searches:
Word search for kids app has puzzles for "small kids," and for "big kids." Different categories and the child can select if he/she wants an easy, medium or hard task to complete. Words are given on the bottom and the child finds the word that is written horizontal, diagonal or vertical.
Kids Pad: has an app called Kids Scramble Game with easy, medium and difficult words. Again, you can sample the app before purchasing it.
Word Dominoes app:
Another app you can sample before purchasing. Children match beginnings and endings to form real word.
Winning Words app:
There are several different games to reinforce vocabulary that can be played by 1 or more players and range in difficulty. These include: antonyms, synonyms, compound words and homophones. This app is for students reading at and above grade 3.
www.dodgonews.com:
Fun articles on current events, sports and more for upper grade level students. After each article there is usually a video to watch about the article. Also included are literal and critical reading comprehension questions. Vocabulary word searches as well.
